Mercy 05:11
Nineteen going on ninety-four That's what you were when I scraped you up off the floor You couldn't believe just what you saw 'Cause you'd been begging at the devil's door Saying please, oh please Release me I can't live like this no more I just want to be free (You get intoxicated and you are under the influence. The influence of what? Demonic Spirits!) I tried to help you save your soul I tried to dig you out of that dark, dark hole I soon realised all your love was chemical And that you had an old deal with the devil You said to me please, oh please Just leave me One hundred souls have tried an failed before Wont you believe me? (You get under the influence of the devil. you listen to the devil on your music. Hey!) Now one of these days, your old friend, the devil, is gonna drag you down Maybe the same day your white medicine turns a strange golden-brown And that day, Hell will be your new town And, yes, you will be missed when you're not around And I'll say, Lucifer Please release him For he was just a child When his life was thrown into a world of sin He used to be a good boy 'til one dark, dark day The day all the goodness he once held Was stolen away And he only wanted the feeling of love So please, if he's gotta go Oh please Have mercy on his soul

about

In Ella Morgan's second EP (recorded in 2015), we are taken on a rollercoaster of genres, exploring a bigger band sound (mysteriously only featuring two performers), rich mixes and layers of unique and experimental sounds that are often difficult to place, but all sourced from analogue music-making techniques.

Start on "No Good at This" with some cynical, heartbreak-sass and a contemporary RnB sensibility. The blunt lyrics set the tone for the album, flitting between tough and fragile. Motownesque backing vocals build throughout.

"Something Sinister" (track 2) Sneaks up on your ears, with Jazz riffs and spooky confrontational vocals which are soon matched by a Garage Rock chorus.

"Mercy" (track 3) sounds like it was dragged out of the gutter and into the church (or vice versa?), with scratchy Blues guitar, distorted vocals and dulcet organ tones, not to mention the occasional interruption of loudly unlovable preacher, Jesse Morell.

A modern, twisted anti-romance story is depicted in "In the Light of the Dawn" (track 4) in Soul Diva vocals, over a classic Blues Rock band sound with gospel choir vocals and rudely dynamic percussion.

"The Devil Was Me" (track 5) pulls at your heartstrings, opening with stripped back acoustic guitar, shimmering percussion and earthy organs. Velvet vocals tell a story of painful realisation, before building into another gospel-inspired crescendo.
